How did you make those awesome digital mockups?
I browsed a LOT of online template sites, and grabbed whatever looked good.
The book mockup used here is by DesignBolts: http://www.designbolts.com/2018/06/07/free-beautiful-paperback-book-title-with-spine-mockup-psd/
Old tablet screen shown in the digital rewards is from Freepik: https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/black-tablet-mockup_764893.htm
New one is from Dribble: https://dribbble.com/shots/3184722-Ipad-Photo-Mockup-Freebie
And the boxset in the stretch goals is by CoverVault: https://covervault.com/6-x-9-book-box-set-psd-mockup-template/

Kickstarter didn't ask for my address, how will you know where to ship Leif & Thorn Volume 5?
Kickstarter doesn’t ask about that until the campaign is over. (This is so I don’t get duplicate/contradicting information from people who change their pledges while it’s is live.)
After the funds are transferred, I’ll send surveys to all backers to collect the information I need, including shipping addresses for everyone who got a paperback (or several).

Can I recycle the envelope you send my book in?
Please do!
I’m using EcoEnclose padded mailers, which are 100% paper product. You can reuse them the next time you have send mail to someone else, or put them directly in the recycling.
(If you get a multi-book order, it’ll be coming in a regular cardboard sleeve/box. Please recycle that too.)

Why is shipping outside the US so expensive?
Unfortunately, I’m not enough of a big deal to use a multinational fulfillment service (which would print hundreds of books in different regions, for cheaper shipping to countries all around the world).
No, this operation is just me, in my living room, packing each order by hand. Until Leif & Thorn gets a few hundred times more popular, this is the best I can do.
The pandemic has only made things worse – and more expensive – for everyone. (Remember the 2021 news stories about a backlog of 100+ container ships off the shore of LA, because the port didn’t have the resources to unload the products fast enough…?) Get your shots, wear your masks, stay safe out there.

Are you sure you can ship Leif & Thorn Volume 5 to my non-US country at all? We keep having trade blocks, and new taxes, and quarantines, and, and, and...
Things are pretty miserable, huh?
Still, all the international backers on previous Leif & Thorn campaigns have gotten their books. And I have no intention of breaking that streak now. If we get to the point when the books are ready to send, and shipping from my country to yours is just flat-out suspended for some reason, I’ll get in touch with the affected backers, and figure out what works for each of you.
This happened with the Volume 4 campaign! Shipping services from the US to Australia and New Zealand were temporarily suspended. I ended up holding onto a couple of packages longer than expected, but was able to ship them once the normal rates resumed, and they all arrived just fine.

A bunch of comic creators moved off of Kickstarter in the past year, right? What was the deal with that? Are you leaving too?
The deal was: In December 2021, Kickstarter announced they were launching a Mystery Blockchain Protocol. Which did not exist yet…so it definitely hadn’t been tested…but they claimed were already committed to transitioning the entire Kickstarter website to run on this Mystery Protocol.
They didn’t give a lot of details! Once users started asking questions, it got really obvious that they didn’t HAVE details. Or…any idea what they were doing, really.
The Mystery Protocol was always doomed to be a terrible idea. A nightmare for security, efficiency, and backer confidentiality. If the Kickstarter higher-ups had just conferred with their technical team…or their legal team…or their financial team…or their Trust & Safety team…any of these groups could’ve given them a long list of the reasons why. (I broke down some of the big ones here: https://www.comicsbeat.com/opinion-kickstarter-wont-explain-their-blockchain-protocol-so-i-will/ .)
Some creators could afford to protest by ditching Kickstarter immediately, and did!
Others adopted a wait-and-see approach: willing to keep using Kickstarter for now, but ready to leave if the Mystery Protocol was ever actually finished and launched. (…Or if one of the up-and-coming KS competitors, some of which have really cool-looking new features, invited them to be a beta tester.)
I’m in the second group. Willing to launch this camapign on KS, specifically because there’s been no progress on the Mystery Protocol. Might try a new platform in a future campaign. We’ll see.

If my tier includes a paperback with a hand-drawn sketch inside, do I get to choose who's in the sketch?
Afraid not. It takes a lot of extra organizational effort on my part – and when I used to offer the choice, most backers didn’t take it anyway. So I’m using the simpler, faster process of “you get what you get.”
Sketched versions of Volume 1 mostly got Leif; Volume 2 was Thorn; 3 was Kale; 4 was Hyacinth. (Place your bets now on who I’ll be putting in Volume 5.)
If your tier comes with custom digital art, that’s a separate thing from the physical sketch in the book, and is totally customizable!

When will I find out if I get to prompt you one of the Early Bird sketches?
I probably won’t ask you for the prompt until after the campaign is over, because backers are always allowed to increase/decrease their pledges before the final deadline – but there’s a way you can check in the meantime.
Visit your Backed Projects page (https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/backings), and click the blue “+” sign next to Leif & Thorn Volume 5. It’ll show a bunch of details, including “Backer number” at the very bottom.
If your number is between 1 and 20, and your pledge is still $30 or more by the end of the campaign, you’re one of the 15 people who get a prompt!

What are my options for the "extra mini-print" and "extra ebook" add-ons?
I can’t show images in these FAQs, so keep an eye on the Updates – I’ll make posts about your options there.

I have some of the earlier Leif & Thorn volumes (1-4), but not all of them. Is there some way to get only a single previous volume added to the order? Currently I can only see all 4 books together.
There is a way, yes – it’s just not on Kickstarter.
After the campaign, I’m doing a new thing where I’ll send everyone a survey using BackerKit, which gives you another chance to pick add-ons. BackerKit is also a lot better at tracking “lots of fiddly little separate add-ons” (as opposed to the built-in Kickstarter function, where I’m focusing on “a few bulk add-ons”).
So the choices on your post-campaign survey will include separate individual books.
(For the same reason, the survey will include all the different ebooks/mini-prints as separate choices, instead of just having the single bulk “extra ebook” option.)

What is BackerKit?
BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!
The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.
How does BackerKit work?
After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.
I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?
The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.
Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.
To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.
How do I update my shipping address?
BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.
When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?
That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.
I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?
As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
